Program Summary:

Assessing (and developing) a supervisees clinical competencies is an inherent aspect of clinical supervision. This program reviews methods supervisors can take to intentionally incorporate assessment into supervision from a strengths-based perspective. Discussion will share recommendations for building a strong supervisory relationship that actively involves assessment and feedback. Types of clinical competencies to assess will be reviewed, as will methods for assessing those priorities, both from a developmental and multiculturally sensitive context. This program will also share and discuss possible strategies for discussing feedback and possible remediation in a non-threatening manner with supervisees. Clinical supervisors will leave this program feeling more confident in their ability to positively assess competencies and foster growth with less experienced clinicians.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify key characteristics of a supervisory working alliance (SWA) that encourages non-threatening assessment and growth.

  • Participants will be able to describe which clinical skills they prioritize in assessing their supervisee’s competence.

  • Participants will be able to associate these clinical priorities with the types of assessment and feedback that best fit themselves and their supervisee.

Audience & Skill Level

Introductory

This session is designed to introduce mental health clinicians (Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and related professions) to the topic. Those with little to no experience or previous training in this area will benefit.

  • 0:20-1:20 Specific skills or competencies to consider in assessment
  • 1:20-1:40 Assessing competencies through a multicultural lens  
  • 1:40-2:10 Methods of assessment
  • 2:10-2:30 Strategies for discussing assessment and feedback with supervisees
  • 2:30-3:00 Setting the stage for remediation and growth in clinical supervision
  • 3:00 Post Test, Evaluations

Charles J. Potter

PHD, LPCC-S

Charles J. (CJ) Potter is one of the clinical directors at Mindfully and a practicing Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S). Part of CJ’s responsibilities at Mindfully includes staying abreast of best practices (including legal and ethical considerations) that impact clinical practice. In this session, CJ shares those insights as they relate specifically to clinical supervision of mental health providers (Counselors, Social-Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists).

Program Approvals

Ohio CSWMFT Approval 

This training is approved for counselor, social work, and marriage and family therapy continuing education. In addition, it is approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board for chemical dependency continuing education. Check CE Broker for detailed breakdown of CE types (provider number 50-24074). 


ASWB ACE Approval 

Mindfully (ACEP provider #1862), is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 6/27/2024 – 6/27/2027. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits. 


NBCC ACEP Approval

Mindfully Academy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7322. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Mindfully Academy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
