Program Summary:

This course introduces therapists to the foundational principles of behaviorism and behavioral therapy. Participants will learn how behavior is shaped, maintained, and modified using evidence-based behavioral strategies, with an emphasis on behavioral chain analysis and practical clinical application in the DBT frame.

Therapists are encouraged to complete this training prior to advancing through other portions of Mindfully's DBT Program (i.e. The DBT Intensive, Parts 1-4, etc.)

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the foundational principles of behaviorism, including classical and operant conditioning.
  • Differentiate between types of reinforcement and punishment, including positive and negative forms.
  • Identify and apply appropriate reinforcement schedules (fixed ratio, variable ratio, fixed interval, variable interval) to support behavior change.
  • Explain how reinforcement schedules influence the acquisition, maintenance, and extinction of behavior.
  • Apply a behavioral chain analysis to assess the sequence and function of target behaviors.
  • Analyze behavioral chains to identify vulnerability factors, prompting events, and maintaining consequences.
  • Develop intervention strategies that target multiple points within a behavioral chain.
  • Create measurable, behaviorally defined treatment goals based on assessment findings.
  • Apply behavioral techniques (e.g., exposure, behavioral activation, contingency management) in clinical scenarios.
  • Evaluate the ethical considerations involved in implementing behavioral interventions.
