Program Summary:

Therapists (and their supervisors) work hard to serve their clients and, for the most part, are able to do so without violating legal and ethical obligations. This training reviews those gray areas where providers can find themselves straying from guidelines. The program reviews common issues and claims filed against all providers and what supervisors can do to more proactively assess for and address those concerns. This leads into a more targeted talk about supervisors specifically and the concerns/claims most commonly raised against this group of practitioners. Case studies on topics such as inadequate supervision, multiple relationships and boundaries, etc. will be used to illustrate these examples while also providing practical tips supervisors can use to navigate these moments in order to best support and protect clients, supervisees, as well as the supervisor.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify common legal and ethical issues facing supervisees and their supervisors.

  • Participants will be able to recall definitions for inadequate supervision and steps to take to reduce the risk of this occurring.

  • Participants will be able to recognize issues of multiple relationships, how they look different in therapy versus supervision, including limitations and when boundaries are violated.
