Program Summary:

Ohio House Bill 68 was passed through the state legislature on 1/24/24. With an effective date of 4/24/24, mental health providers will need to be aware of how this legislature will impact their work with transgender youth. This program aims to review this legislature, feedback and interpretations received from legal counsel, as well as feedback the Ohio CSWMFT has with regards to how the legislation impacts mental health work.

Providers will leave this program armed with insights as to how they can best support their non-binary minors once this law has taken effect.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to list aspects of Ohio HB 68 that have a direct impact on the mental health care of transgender youth.

  • Participants will be discover strategies for navigating the elements of Ohio HB 68 so they can maintain high quality care for their minor transgender clients.

Audience & Skill Level

Introductory

This course is designed to meet the needs of mental health clinicians (counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists) who are working with transgender/queer clients. Previous training may be helpful but not required to benefit from this training

Course Outline & Agenda

  • 2:00-2:30 Review the basic structure and content of the law 
  • 2:30-2:45 Clarify definitions and intent of the law 
  • 2:45-3:45 Review strategies for therapists to support clients impacted by this law 
  • 3:45-4:00 Share resources and emphasize strategies for staying up to date on the law 

To receive course credit, participants must complete the following:

  • Attend the Entire Program

  • Complete the Course Evaluation

  • Once completed and evaluation is received, certificates are released within seven business days.

Charles J. Potter

PHD, LPCC-S

Charles J. (CJ) Potter is one of the clinical directors at Mindfully and a practicing Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S). Part of CJ’s responsibilities at Mindfully includes staying abreast of best practices (including legal and ethical considerations) that impact clinical practice. In this session, CJ shares those insights as they relate specifically to clinical supervision of mental health providers (Counselors, Social-Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists).

Monica Burbank (She/They)

LPCC-S, GSI Team Lead

Monica has a minor in Queer Studies from Northern Arizona University. As a graduate assistant, during her time pursuing her master’s degree in counseling, she worked in the Inclusion and Multicultural Center on campus, specifically in their LGBTQIA Resources and Support office. During her time in the office, she facilitated the campus Safe Zone training, as well as scheduling and marketing for trainings. Since this time, she has developed her own training, which meets national Safe Zone standards, and has taught the training a handful of times over the past 3 years. She has also co-led multiple LGBT support groups at different counseling agencies.

Program Approvals

Ohio CSWMFT Approval 

This training is approved for counselor, social work, and marriage and family therapy continuing education. In addition, it is approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board for chemical dependency continuing education. Check CE Broker for detailed breakdown of CE types (provider number 50-24074). 


ASWB ACE Approval 

Mindfully (ACEP provider #1862), is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 6/27/2023 – 6/27/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits. 


NBCC ACEP Approval

Mindfully Academy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7322. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Mindfully Academy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
