Program Summary:

Diagnosis (and misdiagnosis!) of ADHD has been on the rise. Providers in outpatient settings often encounter clients reporting symptoms of this diagnosis and are faced with the task of determining whether ADHD is present and how to best proceed. This presentation will equip outpatient therapists with the skills necessary to accurately assess ADHD. This includes differentiating between ADHD and diagnoses with overlapping symptoms, assessments or instruments that are appropriate for an outpatient setting, and what providers can do to support a client in accessing more detailed psychological assessment, possible medication management, etc. Providers will understand what they can (and can’t) do directly with their clients in an outpatient setting, and their role in making sure clients receive the diagnosis and care that supports symptom management.

Learning Objectives:

  • Providers will be able to identify which instruments they can (and can’t) apply in an outpatient setting to assess and diagnose ADHD.

  • Providers will be able to summarize the differences in outpatient assessment and what would be included in more advanced psychological assessments.

  • Providers will be able to integrate their outpatient care with other providers to help clients access care (and prescribed medications) to address ADHD symptoms and diagnosis.

Audience & Skill Level

Introductory

This session is designed to introduce mental health clinicians (Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and related professions) to the topic. Those with little to no experience or previous training in this area will benefit.

Course Outline & Agenda

  • 1:00-1:30 Prevalence of ADHD diagnosis and misdiagnosis

  • 1:30-1:50 Brief interventions and most recognizable symptoms of ADHD

  • 1:50 - 3:00 Outpatient assessment and reporting of ADHD

    • 2:30-2:45 Break

  • 3:00- 3:25 Differential Diagnosis with ADHD

  • 3:25-4:15 Advanced psychological testing, and collaborating with prescribers to support client care

  • 4:15 Q&A, Discussion, Evaluations

Instructor

Pamela Gulley

Psychologist

Dr. Pam Gulley is a licensed psychologist with a masters and EdD from the University of Cincinnati. Throughout her career, Dr. Pam has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology, supervised peer clinicians, and practiced psychotherapy with her own clients. She has experience in a number of different settings including in private practice and school-based settings. She is particularly well trained in assessing and addressing ADHD in teens and young adults and spends part of her clinical practice helping clients identify and cope with these symptoms. She also teaches fellow clinicians what they can do to diagnose and treat clients experiencing ADHD and similar symptoms.

Charles J. Potter

PHD, LPCC-S

Charles J. (CJ) Potter is one of the clinical directors at Mindfully and a practicing Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S). Part of CJ’s responsibilities at Mindfully includes staying abreast of best practices (including legal and ethical considerations) that impact clinical practice. In this session, CJ shares those insights as they relate specifically to clinical supervision of mental health providers (Counselors, Social-Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists).

Program Approvals

Ohio CSWMFT Approval 

This training is approved for counselor, social work, and marriage and family therapy continuing education. In addition, it is approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board for chemical dependency continuing education. Check CE Broker for detailed breakdown of CE types (provider number 50-24074). 


ASWB ACE Approval 

Mindfully (ACEP provider #1862), is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 6/27/2024 – 6/27/2027. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits. 


NBCC ACEP Approval

Mindfully Academy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7322. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Mindfully Academy is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
