Program Summary:

Considering the developmental level of a supervisee is a critical component of supervision. This program reviews popular theories of counselor development and how professional growth impacts the supervisory working alliance. We will review the intersection of counselor development with concepts like case conceptualization, documentation, and navigating ethical dilemmas. Models of supervision that operate from a developmental lens will be discussed, emphasizing advantages and possible pitfalls of each. Lastly, research into the professional development of supervisors will also be reviewed. Providers leaving this program will better understand the role of counselor development in supervision as well as strategies or modalities that may best fit themselves.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to recognize popular theories or models of counselor development.

  • Participants will be able to match developmental stages to key concepts addressed in supervision.

  • Participants will recognize milestones in the professional development of clinical supervisors.

Introductory

This session is designed to introduce mental health clinicians (Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and related professions) to the topic. Those with little to no experience or previous training in this area will benefit.

Course Outline & Agenda

  • 1:00-1:45 Review popular theories of counselor development
  • 1:45-2:30 Discussing how clinical competencies appear across different developmental levels in supervision. 
  • 2:30-2:45 Break
  • 2:45-3:45 Developmental models of supervision
  • 3:45-4:15 Research into the professional development of supervisors
  • 4:15- Q&A, Discussion, & Evaluations 

To receive course credit, participants must complete the following:

PHD, LPCC-S

Charles J. (CJ) Potter is one of the clinical directors at Mindfully and a practicing Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S). Part of CJ’s responsibilities at Mindfully includes staying abreast of best practices (including legal and ethical considerations) that impact clinical practice. In this session, CJ shares those insights as they relate specifically to clinical supervision of mental health providers (Counselors, Social-Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists).

Ohio CSWMFT Approval 

This training is approved for counselor, social work, and marriage and family therapy continuing education. In addition, it is approved by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board for chemical dependency continuing education. ASWB ACE Approval 

Mindfully (ACEP provider #1862), is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 6/27/2023 – 6/27/2024. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits.
